History:  On June 19, 1865, union troops arrived in Texas, the westernmost of the confederate states.  They announced that enslaved people in the state were ‘freed’ by the Emancipation Proclamation decree which was signed two years earlier by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863.  And, that the Civil War was officially over.
